I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Jay-Z and Beyonce just celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary. Exciting, right? And because they are kabillionaires, they jetted off to a tropical locale for their vacation. Sunny, exotic Cuba. What’s that? Oh…you don’t care? Well, it turns out neither does anyone else…except for those two Republican politicians from Florida.
On Friday, after finding out about the
vacation humanitarian mission, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Marco Diaz-Balart drafted a letter demanding more information on “…the type of license that Beyonce and Jay-Z received…and who approved such travel.” While they both represent areas with strong Cuban-American populations, their focus on the vacation travel of a celebrity couple is petty and a waste of their resources. The letter continued that they feel strongly about investigating the trip because they “…represent a community…who have been deeply and personally by the Castro regime’s atrocities…”
This letter insinuates a full-scale investigation into the vacation funded in time, money, and resources by taxpayers. If I were a member of their respective Congressional Districts, I’d be appalled. Represent your community by creating a community through comprehensive programs and resources to address the needs in Districts 25 and 27. Rep. Ros-Lehtinen could allocate some of that funding to find a way to provide jobs for a district with the 7th highest unemployment rate in Florida or create GED and diploma equivalency programs for the 13% of her constituents over 25 who have less than a 9th grade education (the highest percentage in the state). Maybe Rep. Diaz-Balart could focus his time on finding a way to provide health insurance to the, state topping, 33% of the population in his district without.
Their argument that they trying to find answers for their population directly affected by government of Fidel Castro is valid, but misses the point. The people of these Florida districts don’t need rhetoric or witch hunts, they need support and resources so that their time as “…political prisoners…” and their memories of “…murdered innocents,” isn’t in vain. Now that they reside in a country where they have access to opportunities unheard of in Cuba, they representatives are acting wasteful and frivolous.
As a matter of fact, I can conduct the entire investigation for Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart for free. How was it that Beyonce and Jay-Z were able to travel to Cuba?
$$$ and the promise of a good PR opportunity.
